Amna
was born and raised in Karachi. She has been scripting
plays and magazine shows for television for the past
many years. Mystery Theatre was the first series she
wrote plays for. Isra and Doraha were some of her
other plays that were highly appreciated.
Amna left for Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) in 1994, where
she stayed for four years. When she came back in 1998,
she joined an international advertising agency MPL
(Lee Burnett), from where she did her six-month internship
as a visualizer and a copywriter. Then she joined
Combine Productions which was headed by Ghazanfar
Ali (Indus Vision). She was given the huge task of
audio dubbing and producing world-renowned children’s
programme Sesame Street as Khul Ja Sim Sim. She led
a dynamic team comprising of some very talented youngsters
including Khalid Anum, Ahsan Rahim, Amna Khan, Najaf
Bilgrami and Amir Agha. The series was translated
by Shoaib Hashmi. The show proved to be one of the
most popular programmes. It was aired continuously
for more than five years.
To further her career Amna left Combine Productions
and joined Pyramid Productions, headed by Rohail Hayat.
She scripted the magazine show Andaz Apna Apna for
two consecutive seasons.
As a freelancer, she scripted another magazine show
Rivaaj for BMN Productions. She later joined Indus
Vision and hosted, scripted, co-produced and co-directed
Glitz and Glamour. While doing the show, Amna got
a job offer from Geo, which she accepted in 2002.
Those were the initial days of Geo, that has now turned
into one of the biggest private channels. At Geo,
she produced many programmes including Geo Iftar,
Bachay Man Kay Sachay, Bhangra Night and an exclusive
series on children’s view on Iraq War.
Amna left Geo in November 2005 and joined CNBC Pakistan.
There she floated the concept of an interactive live
show based on interviews of celebrities. Her concept
was highly appreciated and was immediately accepted
by the channel. The show was titled Red Carpet. The
programme, with its innovative idea, became an instant
hit. From its launch in April 2006, thirty-seven episodes
have been aired and every interview was highly appreciated.
Amna has been producing, directing, scripting and
hosting the show.
Amna is a graduate in English literature and Fine
Arts. Almost after fifteen years, she is once again
pursuing her interest in arts and is attending art
classes. Amna has a flair for music too. She has been
taking semi-classical music lessons from Ustad Buland
Iqbal. In her leisure time, she writes short stories
and poetry. Expressing her views on working with her
male colleagues she said, “It is up to the woman
to draw a line and make sure that line is never crossed
at any cost.” She firmly believes in respecting
and being respected.
