The year 2006 was perhaps one of the best years for the music industry. Our musicians and pop crooners were appreciated both on national and international levels. New music channels including the international MTV, AAG and Play were launched. The talent of our pop stars Jawad Ahmed, Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan was recognized in Bollywood. They all sang the hottest selling numbers of Bollywood movies.
The year 2006 also saw the comeback of two Pakistani pop music giants, Alamgir and Zoheb Hassan. Both came back with a bang. Sajjad Ali proved that there is no comparison of his singing capabilities. Atif launched his new album Doorie and Ali Zafar came up with Masti. Both had one thing in common, the videos were made in India. We seriously think that beside the big budgets and huge names, both videos lacked the artistic touch and heavily relied on vulgarity, Ali was not hesitant to show his skin and that of his female co-stars. Dear Atif and Ali, our video directors are very talented and are making superb videos. Please, next time instead of going for an outing and spending fortunes on the videos, simply rely on our local talent. We assure you that Saqib, Jami, Umar Anwar, Jawad Bashir or Sohail Javed can do a better job.
Zeeshan Perwez directed an animated video for Ali Azmat’s Teri Yaad. We have no doubt in our minds that this video is aesthetically the most powerful video of 2006.
Haroon came out from his hibernation and delivered a very peppy song Jiya Jaye. Talented Amna Khan directed the video of the song. Jawad’s Aasman Say Ooncha is a tribute to young Pakistanis. He changed his singing style in this song, and his new rock styled song is gaining popularity.
Aaroh finally came out with a masterpiece, Raag Neela, although the video is an exact frame by frame copy of a European band’s video, the song is widely appreciated. This is perhaps the only song released in 2006 that really doesn’t need a video.
Then in 2006 Shan, seeing the dying film industry, ventured into the world of directing videos. With two great videos (tributes to Madam Noorjehan and Ustad Mehdi Hassan Khan) he proved his mettle.
Annie, with her ultra modern looks but without a proper singing talent, appeared like a bubble and vanished into thin air. The young and talented Umar Inayat proved with his hit numbers that he is here to stay. Abbas Ali Khan totally relied on Malal and in the last month of 2006 came up with a remix version of the song that completely ruined the whole listening pleasure.
Lastly, the most shining stars and in our point of view, the winners of 2006 music scene were the young Raaga Boys. They all are teenage brothers and sons of the great music legend Ustad Hamid Ali Khan.
