The number of art exhibitions taking place in Karachi galleries
recently has to be a record. Miniature paintings were currently
seen at two galleries with Waseem Ahmed exhibiting his new
work at the Clifton Art Gallery, and a group display curated
by Imran Qureshi, displayed at the Canvas gallery. The work
of the six young, very talented artists was an exhilarating
experience. It was interesting to view the work of Amjad Ali
Talpur, a collection of portraits assembled from minute squares,
and note his brother is also a gifted artist. I very much
enjoyed the work of Safdur Qureshi, another artist from Sindh,
who incorporated into his diffused rainbows loosely defined
insects, a spontaneous element that was totally contemporary.
In December the VM Gallery displayed the work of a young artist,
Sara Riaz Khan, who lives in Oman with her family. In her
first solo exhibition Sara had used mixed media to explore
her inspiring surroundings of mountains and plains. “Colour
instinctively motivates me,” she said. “The reclamation
of painting by scratching into the medium, letting the light
back through and relaying with primer or masking fluid allows
a range of subtle tones and washes. A strong negative shape
is always attractive, there is much to explore in the spaces
within.”
